01 — Introduction
As part of my Sociology degree, I completed an internship with Keep Thomas County Beautiful that allowed me to combine academic research with professional marketing and communications experience.
The experience reinforced a leadership philosophy that has guided my career: meaningful change begins by understanding people. Research, communication, and strong community partnerships work together to create lasting impact.
02 — The Challenge
Keep Thomas County Beautiful sought to strengthen community awareness, increase public engagement, and expand support for its mission.
Before developing communication strategies, it was important to understand how residents viewed their community, what issues mattered most, and where opportunities for engagement existed.
Listen first. Use research to inform strategy. Then build communications and partnerships that reflected what the community actually needed.
03 — Research Before Strategy
Working through the Sociology Department, I participated in a county-wide community survey designed to better understand residents' perspectives, priorities, and attitudes toward community improvement.
The research provided valuable insights that informed communication efforts and reinforced my belief that effective strategy begins with listening before acting.
Research should inform strategy — not follow it.

05 — Leadership Perspective
Rather than treating sociology and marketing as separate disciplines, this experience demonstrated how they complement one another.
Understanding people through research creates better communication. Effective communication builds stronger partnerships. Strong partnerships create stronger communities.
06 — Reflection
The best solutions begin with understanding people. Whether leading students, strengthening organizations, or serving communities, meaningful leadership starts by asking thoughtful questions, listening carefully, and building strategies around what people truly need.
Connection to My Leadership Philosophy
This experience reflects the same leadership philosophy found throughout my career: curiosity before assumptions, research before strategy, people before processes, and lasting impact through collaboration.
